In the end we decided to re-release the version of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.screentime&amp;hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Screen Time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that was originally on the Play Store, but we had to make a change and remove the password protection on uninstallation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The settings of Screen Time are still password protected but inquisitive kids could work out a way to uninstall the app without having the password. For some parents this isn\u2019t a big concern but we always want to make Screen Time as secure as possible to give everyone peace of mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So you can still get a version of Screen Time that has password protected uninstallation, and it\u2019s available from our own servers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/install\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We also message parents if it looks like Screen Time has been removed or is able to be uninstalled to let them know about the more secure version.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1733 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/unknow-sources-settings.png\" alt=\"unknow sources settings\" width=\"528\" height=\"286\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 528px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 528\/286;\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1733\" src=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/unknow-sources-settings.png\" alt=\"unknow sources settings\" width=\"528\" height=\"286\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the things that you need to do to install the version of Screen Time that has password protection for uninstalling is to enable a setting within Android called Unknown Sources. This allows you to install apps on the device that aren\u2019t on the Play Store. Some see this as a security risk but for others it\u2019s no big deal. Either way it\u2019s important to understand what that feature does so we\u2019re going to take a look at it in more depth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaving Unknown Sources enabled<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If, after you\u2019ve read the rest of this article, you\u2019re still not sure about having Unknown Sources enabled. You can play it safe and disable Unknown Sources straight after you\u2019ve installed Screen Time. The only downside to this is that you won\u2019t receive automatic updates. Instead you\u2019ll need to periodically enable Unknown Sources to download the updated version of Screen Time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Into the Unknown<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There has always been a lot of misleading information on digital security, very little of this information is based on data and most times arguments boil down to the more security the better, without looking at the likelihood. Yes, the chances of having an accident are less if you don\u2019t ever go outside, but does that mean you should be a hermit?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;less than an estimated 0.001% of app installations on Android are able to evade the system\u2019s multi-layered defenses and cause harm to users.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/u\/0\/117193854832907724231\/posts\/MpUw7KzwJQP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Android Security chief Adrian Ludwig <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firstly leaving Unknown sources disabled is only a benefit to security if it remains disabled. Many kids already know about side loading apps and installing apps from other stores (they often try this trying to get around Screen Time), so there\u2019s a chance that they will enable unknown sources themselves. Most importantly though, Unknown Sources is just a step in Android\u2019s multi layered security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/193dtvab4yyfmjpg.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1730 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/193dtvab4yyfmjpg-650x371.jpg\" alt=\"193dtvab4yyfmjpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"371\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/193dtvab4yyfmjpg-650x371.jpg 650w, https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/193dtvab4yyfmjpg.jpg 800w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 650px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 650\/371;\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1730\" src=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/193dtvab4yyfmjpg-650x371.jpg\" alt=\"193dtvab4yyfmjpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/193dtvab4yyfmjpg-650x371.jpg 650w, https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/193dtvab4yyfmjpg.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Apart from Unknown Sources<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The user needs to confirm the installation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google&#8217;s &#8220;Verify Apps&#8221; security feature, which checks the app against its own database of malware before it can be installed <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the app looks like it is a problem then a warning is shown on screen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, if the app looks like it could be a problem, the app is sandboxed and restricted to the permissions granted to it, and Android&#8217;s own security checks again whenever the app runs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This helps create a fence around that app and prevent it from doing much damage if that\u2019s its intent.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Android takes their security seriously, as they have too with kids and adults spending so much time on mobile devices, and they are pretty confident in the defenses they have in place. You could say that they would present the data in that way, and the stats won\u2019t look the same if you ask security companies, but even if Android skew the data it\u2019s still very few apps that get through their defences. But who do you put your trust in?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust in yourself and educate your kids! Android provides the tools to prevent malware but the biggest risk is the user, if the warnings are ignored and apps are installed despite them then that\u2019s where problems come in. The big two that will help prevent 99.99% of problems are to ask your kids:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To only install apps from Google Play<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be aware of Android\u2019s warnings<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re a regular reader of our blog and saw our review of 2015 you&#8217;ll know about the troubles we had with the Google Play Store in May. At that time we made some changes to the Screen Time app so that we could continue to distribute through the Play Store.<\/p>\n<p>Google got in touch with us again at the start of this year to let us know that one of those changes goes against their policy so we were asked to make some big changes again to how parents download and install Screen Time.
