However there are some technical details that you should bear in mind if you decide to set up someone with a User profile:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uninstalling an app on one account uninstalls it on all accounts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accepting new permissions for an app on one account accepts them across all accounts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The owner of the phone can remove a secondary account at any time<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The owner can decide if a secondary account can make or receive calls, or send and receive text messages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you remove a secondary account, all the installed apps (just the ones that are not present on more than one account) are deleted, and all the user data is erased.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tablets<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Android tablets things are a little bit different. When you open<\/span><b> Android Settings &gt;&gt; Users<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and tap <\/span><b>New User<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you have the choice of either creating a new User profile (same as you find on phones) or a new Restricted profile.<\/span><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1937 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Screenshot_20160406-154903.png-1536\u00d72048-.png\" alt=\"Android tablet profiles\" width=\"567\" height=\"288\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 567px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 567\/288;\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1937\" src=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Screenshot_20160406-154903.png-1536\u00d72048-.png\" alt=\"Android tablet profiles\" width=\"567\" height=\"288\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\nSo what\u2019s this Restricted profile and how\u2019s it different to the User profile I hear you ask. Well a Restricted Profile allows you to choose which apps you allow this new user to have access to. Which is worth remembering later on if you\u2019re going to install any GPS or kid locator app on that profile.<br \/>\nFor some parents, usually of younger children, Restricted profiles work as <a href=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/parental-controls\/\">parental controls<\/a> and the features to block access to certain apps are enough for what they want to do.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dreaded Guest profile<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is another type of profile that is available on both Tablets and Phones. The Guest profile is pretty much the same as a User profile but is intended to be used by someone who needs the device for a short time. It\u2019s easy to remove all of the guest users info so others can\u2019t see it. You\u2019ll see why we call it dreaded later on \u00a0(Android could have made everyone\u2019s lives easier by allowing parents to disable the guest).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"stprofile\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">User profiles and Screen Time<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Screen Time works well with both Restricted profiles and User profiles. If you are thinking about setting up Screen Time on a shared device using either of these types of profiles then the set up is a little different to normal. We have resources to help you get set up so check out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/help\/setting-up-screen-time-on-a-restricted-profile\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Restricted profiles and this one for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/help\/multi-user-setup\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">User profiles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll give you the bad news first <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">User profiles can be used for bad. Because they do a great job of keeping things separate, \u00a0kids can switch to another profile that Screen Time isn\u2019t installed on and they won\u2019t be tracked. For a lot of parents this isn\u2019t a big concern as User profiles is a fairly well hidden feature, and not many kids will find out about unless they go snooping.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do I tell if my child is using profiles?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because Screen Time isn\u2019t installed on other profiles on the device then any activity on those profiles won\u2019t show up in the Screen Time App Log. So if the app log is empty or doesn\u2019t have as much in there as you would think then that\u2019s a good clue.<\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1949 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/app-log.png\" alt=\"app log\" width=\"292\" height=\"372\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 292px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 292\/372;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1949\" src=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/app-log.png\" alt=\"app log\" width=\"292\" height=\"372\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other than that you can go into the <\/span><b>Android Settings &gt;&gt; Users<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and check to see if there are any other profiles set up there. If there\u2019s another profile that you didn\u2019t set up then there\u2019s a good chance it\u2019s being used for dark purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now for some good news<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For parents that suspect their kids are using profiles to get around their Screen Time limits, there are methods that you can use to close this loophole on most devices. I say \u201cmost devices\u201d because manufacturers tamper with how Android works to create their own version of the operating system. For example Samsung\u2019s version of Android (called Touchwiz) is quite a bit different to the pure Android that you\u2019ll find on Nexus devices.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tablets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Closing the loophole &#8211; Tablets<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The quickest way to prevent kids from accessing any other profiles, including the guest profile, is to set up your child with a restricted profile and this prevents them from creating new profiles or using the guest profile. Easy peasy! <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/screentimelabs.com\/help\/setting-up-screen-time-on-a-restricted-profile\/\">this video<\/a> to see how to set up Screen Time on restricted profiles.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>A couple of small things to watch out for though.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can still switch to other existing profiles from a Restricted profile so make sure that any other profiles already on the device are set up with the lock screen password. This feature is turned off by default but it might be worth checking if your kids are getting around Screen Time and you\u2019re not show how. So you\u2019ll need to set up a normal User profile for them, in that case closing the loophole is done in the same way as you would on phones, keep reading to see how to do that.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"phones\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Closing the loophole &#8211; Phones<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things get a little more difficult on Android phones because the Restricted profile option isn\u2019t available.
