The social network is restricted to users age 13 and over but has no robust verification tools to prevent younger children from opening accounts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It has approximately 215 million registered users, although the base of active users is likely much smaller, and is available on iOS and Android<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The main premise of Ask.fm is to ask anonymous questions. That is where the site&#8217;s problems begin, as a brief look at controversies and scandals around it shows.<br \/><br \/><strong>A Brief Chronology of Controversies Around Ask.fm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>2013<\/strong>: A British teenager&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-leicestershire-23584769\">reportedly commits suicide over cyberbullying<\/a>&nbsp;on the network. The site hires more moderators and enhances reporting and blocking functions.<\/li><li><strong>2014<\/strong>: The site is purchased by IAC, refocusing on safety and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/social-affairs\/ask-fm-promises-to-become-bully-free-and-relocates-to-dublin-1.1989077\">firing the original founders<\/a>&nbsp;over their attitudes towards cyberbullying and user responsibility. Soon after this, BBC News reports on the terrorist group ISIS&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-28016834\">using the platform to recruit<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>2018<\/strong>: The site is relaunched as a \u201cblockchain-based social network\u201d with its own cryptocurrency. A promotional stunt burying hardware containing $50,000 in coins at the summit of Everest&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailydot.com\/debug\/askfm-cryptocurrency-mount-everest\/\">ends with a climber lost and presumed dead<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>2019<\/strong>: The site launches Leaderboards, featuring the most active users, and tipping, which allows rewarding answers with coins.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>The history of the site is essentially an arms race between the worst of the internet and cyberbullying protocols, as its anonymity focus allows bad behavior, and the site is almost constantly chasing down and dealing with one problem or another. Introducing a financial incentive into the mix, despite the currency not exactly thrilling the investing world, is likely going to create new problems.<br \/><br \/>This is not to dismiss the site totally: For example, it may be useful for teens who need to collect answers to questions for school projects about opinion or design.
